Creuset

Glossary

What is a Creuset?

A creuset is the French term for ‘crucible’ or ‘cauldron’ and serves as the inspiration behind the Le Creuset name. A crucible is typically a ceramic or metal container in which chemical compounds or metals are subjected to extremely high temperatures and eventually melted. This vessel is used to craft Le Creuset’s iconic products, providing the ideal environment for premium materials to be melted down. Creusets have typically been crafted with clay in the past, but any material that can withstand high temperatures can be used.

How is a Creuset used?

A creuset serves many different purposes and is typically used to contain chemical compounds in a laboratory. This vessel comes in many different shapes and sizes and regularly features a corresponding lid to lock in the heat and various metals. A creuset offers an ideal environment for materials to melt and has been used to craft premium cookware such as pots and pans since 1925. In fact, the iron in the Le Creuset factory is heated to a sweltering temperature of 5,184°F (2,862°C). Each piece of cookware is cast from a fresh sand mould that is then broken back down, before being smoothed by hand and enamelled. As a result, no two pieces of cookware are the same.

Benefits of a Creuset

A creuset dates all the way back to the B.C. era and is still being used prominently today in labs or to craft premium cookware among other uses. This vessel is ideal for containing chemical compounds or metals and is capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures. The creuset first started off as an irregular shape dating back to the Iron Age but has since been transformed into a more traditional conical shape. This ensures that metals can be contained with ease and melted evenly.
