Casting

Glossary

What is Casting?

Casting is a process in which a liquid metal is melted down before being poured into a mould. Pig iron, steel, and recycled iron is typically used and melted down using a temperature over 2000°F, culminating in the perfect molten cast iron formula. Le Creuset’s cast iron cookware is casted through this process, resulting in slick and stylish cookware that is made to last generations. Casting also creates an ideal surface for cooking, offering superior heat retention and durability.

How is Casting used?

Casting is used to melt down liquid metal and create the ideal cast iron cookware. This process does not affect metal composition and can be used to form cookware in any imaginable shape, from pots and pans to French or Dutch Ovens. Once the melted liquid is poured into the mould, it is allowed to solidify. This solidified portion is known as ‘a casting’. This casting is then broken off the mould to complete the process. Casting typically involves mixing two or more metals together (often pig iron, steel, and recycled iron), and is perfectly suited for designing intricate shapes that would otherwise be too difficult to recreate.

Benefits of Casting

Many materials can be cast, making it a very popular manufacturing process. Casting offers the capacity for design detail and is perfect for creating durable cookware that is resistant to chipping, staining, or peeling over time. Casting is ideal for shaping metal to a particular mould without affecting the metal composition. Cookware is made through this process, moreover, is able withstand varying temperatures without cracking or warping.

History of Casting

Casting is a 7000-year-old process and was typically used to make tools, weapons, and religious objects. The oldest known surviving cast is a copper frog from 3200 BC. Metal casting can be traced all the way to the Bronze Age in Egypt, where it became an increasingly popular way to acquire wealth and power. Today, this process is used to craft just about any material, including premium cookware.
