  • ½ cup (125 ml) maple syrup
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp (1 ml) salt
  • ½ tsp (2 ml) cinnamon
  • ½ cup (125 ml) softened butter
  • 1 loaf challah or egg bread, approximately 10 slices
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) slivered almonds, toasted
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) icing sugar
  • To taste blueberry sauce

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

Lightly butter a Rectangular Casserole with Lid. Set aside.


In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla, salt and cinnamon. Set aside.


Butter one side of each slice of bread. Set aside.


Lay half the bread in the prepared casserole, buttered side up. Cut bread if necessary to cover the entire surface of the dish. Pour half the egg mixture. Cover with remaining bread, buttered side up. Drizzle with remaining egg mixture. Cover with lid and refrigerate overnight.


With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).


Bake for 20 minutes with the lid on. Remove lid and continue baking for 30 minutes. Finish cooking under the broiler until bread is golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes.


Garnish with almonds and icing sugar. Serve with a side of blueberry sauce.
