The Round Dutch Oven

Great design tells a story. At Le Creuset, it has taken shape through mid-century icons and thoughtful collaborations, with each creation reflecting the spirit of its time and shaping the way we cook, serve, and live.

Enamelled Cast Iron

1958

In 1958, Le Creuset invited Raymond Loewy, widely celebrated as the “Father of Industrial Design,” to reimagine the classic cocotte. Loewy, whose work includes the Lucky Strike logo and Air Force One interior, created the Coquelle, an oblong, angular Dutch oven that brought mid-century modern flair to the kitchen. Although its bold new form initially raised eyebrows at Le Creuset’s board, a glamorous launch dinner at Le Grand Véfour proved its appeal. Reissued in 2014 as a limited-edition treasure, the Coquelle remains a standout piece that turns every meal into a stylish statement.

Enamelled Cast Iron

1972

Italian designer Enzo Mari joined Le Creuset in the early 1970s to introduce La Mama, a line defined by clean lines and the signature T-shaped handle. Mari’s commitment to honest, functional design ensured these pots delivered even heat distribution, easy pouring and a no-fuss cooking surface. La Mama combines minimalist Italian flair with Le Creuset’s legendary durability to create cookware that works beautifully day after day.

1987

In 1987, French designer Jean-Louis Barrault reimagined the Loewy legacy with Futura, a collection that balances sleek form and playful colour. Each piece gleams in two-tone enamel finishes, from polished black to lagoon blue, accentuating clean silhouettes and practical handles. Futura captured international attention, earning Le Creuset a spot among the world’s top 30 French products in a Newsweek worlwide survey. Today, Futura remains a design favourite for its blend of contemporary style and Le Creuset’s timeless performance.

Enamelled Cast Iron

2020s

Boundaries continued to be pushed in production techniques with the introduction of applique and specialised embossing for the cast iron range. In 2019, the partnership with Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise brought to life a collection that once again exemplified Le Creuset’s creative approach to product design, a fundamental part of our brand DNA that continues on. The highlight of the collection was the Tatooine Round Dutch Oven, the first hand-painted enamelled cast iron piece we ever created with only nine pieces worldwide, only available by lottery. Soon after, the Harry Potter™ collection brought Hogwarts magic to the kitchen with Cerise Dutch Ovens and its lightning-bolt knobs, Deathly Hallows spoon rests and more. These collections underscore Le Creuset’s enduring mission: to fuse form, function, and joy in every kitchen.
