Here are the five simple ingredients you’ll need along with the steps to follow.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) sugar
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp (1 ml) kosher salt
  • A few pinches ground cloves
  • 3 small firm apples (such as Honeycrisp, Empire, Granny Smith)

INSTRUCTIONS

Place one oven rack in the top third of the oven and a second rack in the bottom third. Preheat the oven to 200°F (95°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon, salt and cloves.

Using a mandoline or very sharp knife, cut the apples into very thin slices, starting at the bottom and working your way up to the top. The slices should be between 1/8 inch (3 mm) and ¼ inch (6 mm) thick. Remove any seeds.

Lay the apple slices out on the baking sheets. Sprinkle lightly with the sugar mixture on both sides. Arrange the apples in a single layer not letting the slices overlap.

Bake in the oven for 1 hour. Flip the apple slices over and rotate the baking sheets in the oven. Bake for another hour. Turn off the oven and leave the chips to cool and dry out in the oven for another hour. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely (they will crisp up even more as they cool).

Serve in a 400 ml Apple Casserole.
